How does ozone gas trap UV rays from the Sun? Likewise, how does carbon dioxide, etc. trap heat from the Sun?

By the way, why is ozone gas harmful to us on the ground but how is it depleted by CFCs (cholorofluorocarbons) ? Also, I read one book that did not list carbon dioxide as a major source of acid rain (it said sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides). Why?
