Why is the US infant mortality rate so high compared to other developed nations?

Because all those countries on the list are not held to the same standards. Each country submits it's own statistics, therefore each country gets to decide what the criteria is that they will be judged by. Therefore it is possible for a country to change it's rankings simply by changing the criteria used to judge viable births.
