Is there a diffrence in PCi slots?

Is there different types of pci slots because i bought a soundcard that when i install it on my motherboard it will not let my pc boot up peroid just a black screen! but when i take it out my pc works fine and boots and my old soundcard works fine in the pci slot! now my question is i noticed that on the box of the soundcard it say compatible with pci slots (2.1 and 2.2) and i have also seen on some hardware boxes (2.3 slots also)? does that mean there are diffrent types of pci slots (I am not refering to pci express slots, AGP slots or those short pci slots either)
