Transfer rules?

With the window now open, would somebody care to explain some of the more complex side to the rules that govern transfers. I.e. The restrictions on how many teams one player can play for in any one season. Is it a Northern Hemisphere season or is it a calendar season? Loans between clubs, i believe these are governed by complex rules.
