Some good modern British novels?

I'm an English major and don't have much time to read novels on my own but Christmas break is coming up and I'd love some ideas! My recent faves are the Bridget Jones books and Mark Haddon. I seem to favor Modern Brit novels but I also like American Southern Lit. like Sue Monk Kidd. Any suggestions are appreciated!!
