Why is such a large population of the homeless in the U.S. war veterans?

Think of it as a someone buying a little puppy, it keeps you entertained and as soon as you get bored of it you either take it out to a field and shoot it or take it to the vets to get put down or just abandon it to starve. That's how the USA treats its veterans.
