A question to Muslims: age of Aisha when she married the Prophet?

I am reading a Lebanese book about the Prophet's wives and daughters. It says that when he married Aisha she was six. Could pls someone Muslim clarify this? should this be taken literally or it is just to say that she was pretty young? thank you for your help.
